It has to be remembered that it is important that a corporate image programme is related to the strategies devised in the strategic marketing planning process. Simply because corporate image may be seen as a tactical rather than strategic issue does not mean that the two are unrelated. Corporate image programmes may best be viewed as part of the operationalization and implementation of a strategic marketing plan. In any corporate image programme the desired image plan will be an amalgamation of what, ideally, the corporate image needs to be in order to achieve the objectives of the strategic marketing

plan and, having researched the current image assessment, what it is possible and necessary to do to achieve this desired image.

There are a number of tools and media available for achieving the objectives set in the desired image plan. In any formalized corporate image programme it is likely that all of these will be used in order to ensure that the desired image is received and retained by the firm’s most relevant publics. The main major tool is Media relations.

It is in the area of media relations, i.e. interfacing between the firm and the relevant media (web, newspapers, journals, magazines, TV, radio, etc.) that inform its publics, that the foundations and major expertise of PR people are to be found (indeed for many years PR was often interpreted as standing for press relations rather than public relations). There are always media that are interested in carrying stories that may be deemed to be ‘newsworthy’ in some respect, and it is up to the firm to ensure that the amount and type of exposure it receives in the media is sufficient to meet its corporate image needs. Preparing press releases and communicating effectively with the media are the areas in which firms benefit most from PR consultancy help.

Many firms, however, still expend too much effort in interfacing with the journals and magazines that relate to their profession and are read largely by other professionals, and not enough time and effort interfacing with media that are important to existing and potential clients.

Media relations, if handled carefully, can provide very credible exposure in the eyes of potential and existing clients since the media itself carries unsponsored and therefore more objective messages to the firm’s publics. Thus an article in the Financial Times which describes a law firm as widely recognized as having specialist expertise in the area of city fraud and ‘insider trading’, carrying a quote from a partner in this firm’s specialist department as a part of a news report on a particular event, sends a more powerful, memorable and ‘objective’ message to readers than a full-page colour advertisement in the same issue of the same newspaper. This obviously means that it is the media employees who have control over the message carried and not the firm and this is obviously a disadvantage vis-à-vis media advertising. However, the objectivity of the media does confer much more credibly on the message. If a firm is serious about managing its media relations then it has to recognize that it is a long-term process of relationship-building with a number of writers, reporters, researchers, editors, etc. in a number of different media, and that building such relationships takes time and effort on the part of the professional.

Most professional service firms, even those with expensive public relations help, largely ignore the potential benefits of actually writing articles for magazines and journals. To a certain extent this type of media relations provides the best combination of advertising and PR since it is not ‘paid for’ sponsorship and therefore has some degree of objectivity conferred upon it by being published, and it offers the firm greater control over the message. A particularly useful way of coming to the attention of potential clients is writing articles upon subjects of interest, in which the firm has some expertise, and publishing them in media used by potential clients (and existing clients) in target markets. This has produced very good contacts and results for management consultancy firms, accountancy and law firms and even consulting engineering and architectural practices.
